SHOOK! Most plastic (especially single-use plastic) is not recycled.
So now you may be thinking, “Well this sucks, I will make sure I recycle all of my plastic straws from here on out!”. But you know, it takes more than 200 years for a plastic straw to break down and even then, it doesn’t disappear completely but rather becomes smaller pieces of plastic, meaning these things will be filling up landfills or oceans for years.
We won’t make you watch the video of a straw being pulled out of a turtle’s nose because it’s too sad, but know that it’s happening. We know there are tons of environmental issues to get behind, but refusing to use plastic straws any more is super-easy. Here are a few ways you can help save the planet:
Refuse the straw
Drink your beverage straight from the container, just like in the old days. Tell the person serving you on beforehand that you don’t want a straw, it’s really that easy!
Bring your own
If you are a big fan of drinking your iced coffee through straws and don’t want to give it up, then now is the time to invest in your own personal straw. Keeping a glass or steel straw in your handbag might sound crazy, but its totally doable and if people give you weird looks, just ask them why they hate saving the planet.
Reach out to local businesses
The power is in your hands, start by messaging your local food spots (We KNOW you like to take cute Instagram pics in that restaurant next door…) explaining why you need them to stop using straws. Link them to helpful articles, offer alternative solutions and tell them to share the good news that they support the movement on social media (it’s good PR, guys).
